Retired Commissioner of the Royal Gibraltar Police Ian McGrail: Commission of Inquiry

Following his premature retirement as Commissioner of the Royal Gibraltar Police in June 2020, and certain comments made in Parliament under protection of immunity, Ian McGrail called on the Government of Gibraltar to convene a public Inquiry to be chaired by a UK judge.

On the 4th February 2022, the Governor of Gibraltar Vice Admiral Sir David Steel KBE, DL appointed Sir Charles Peter Lawford Openshaw, a retired judge of the High Court of England & Wales “to inquire, as he shall in his absolute discretion consider appropriate, into the reasons and circumstances leading to Mr. McGrail ceasing to be Commissioner of Police in June 2020 by taking early retirement”.

A two-day preliminary hearing will be held at the Garrison Library in Gibraltar on the 22nd and 23rd June 2022.

Mr. McGrail is a core participant in the Inquiry and is represented by a team led by Charles Gomez, principal Barrister at Charles Gomez & Company.
